Choose The Right Chicken Coop Design

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Hey everyone, James here.

I’m glad you found this site if you are looking for a good chicken coop design. I suggest you read on because this will be packed with useful information. But if you really don’t want or don’t have time to read all, you could just check what worked for me in the end, after trying a chain of different chicken coop plans.

Some time ago, my wife Megan and me decided that we are going to have chickens. We had some other animals before, like sheep and goats. But we didn’t know anything about having chickens. It was up to me to find out as much as possible about raising chickens. I learned a lot and nearly everything I learned could be used right away. Like which foods to use etc. But there was one thing that was bugging me. What kind of a chicken coop should I have? Should I build one myself or should I just buy it? I saw a lot of different designs that seemed to be appropriate for us. I bought a prebuilt chicken coop. It was of no use and I had to sell it. After that I decided to build one myself. I bought the plans and tried to build the coop myself. That didn’t work out either. I hope you learn from my mistakes and don’t make the same mistakes yourself.

I was in a difficult situation. My wife was expecting that I will find a suitable chicken coop design. We already had everything planed. The only thing missing was the coop. Megan wanted to buy another one. A coop way more expensive than the one I bought before. I asked her to wait and give me some time. I needed to find something quick so I asked my friends, searched on the internet and even borrowed some books in the library (don’t do that, it’s a waste of your time). And finally, I found it. A chicken coop plan that worked really well. It was cheap and I didn’t even need any new tools (just the usual tools like a hammer or a saw). It wasn’t hard to build and I’m not very good at building things. The chicken coop building plans even allowed me to customize it to my needs since there were several designs to choose from. It also gave me several tips such as how to best position my coop and which materials to use. Everthing I needed to know about a proper chicken coop was included. Even which foods can harm my chickens and how to take care of my chickens if they get sick.

There were also a few things in the manual I didn’t really need, like how to make a portable chicken coop or a very big chicken coop. But you may want a portable/big chicken coop. We didn’t.

Other than that, this is the best thing you can get if you want a quality chicken coop design. Your chicken will be healthy and satisfied and you will get healthy eggs of good quality. That was exactly what I was looking for, and you should see Megan’s face when she saw it, she couldn’t belive how much money she wanted to spend and how cheap this was. Now go and check it out, you won’t regret it!

A Good Chicken Coop Design

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Finding a good chicken coop design might not be as easy as you think. There are several things you need to take into consideration when searching for good chicken coop plans. Even when you find an appropriate design you will probably need to modify it and customize some of it to suit your environment. You need to decide on the size of your chicken coop depending on how much space you have. If you have any problems with predators make sure to use a fence along with a good coop to make sure your chicken are safe. You need to consider the maintenance cost and additional supplies needed, too. Some designs will need more maintenance and some will need less, but the key is to focus on the quality of the coop, even if it means there will be more maintenance needed. The last thing with the customization is to just observe your chickens. If you observe your chicken’s behaviour, you will notice things that need modification. Things that you wouldn’t find otherwise and you probably wouldn’t think of it yourself either. So just observe your chickens and see how they like the coop, you can always modify it a bit and make it better.

There is another thing that I would like to mention here in my first post. There are two views on chicken coops. One says that the chicken coop design needs to allow you to have a controlled environment inside the coop because the chicken can’t tolerate the outside conditions (like bad weather) very well. The other one says that the chicken coop shouldn’t be too confined because bad air, darkness and poor ventilation aren’t the proper conditions for your chicken and your chicken need a lot of fresh air and space. My opinion is that you should take the middle way. Have your chicken coop spacious and well ventilated, but be sure that you can also control the environment inside the coop in case of bad weather.
